Spring: May & June (The Action-Packed Kickoff)

Spring in Traverse City is nothing short of legendary. As the water warms up, the fish get active, hungry, and highly accessible.

May: Shallow Water Action

May is a dream month for light-tackle anglers.

• Lake Trout & Cisco: You don't need to troll deep water yet. In May, Lake Trout and Cisco push into the shallows. You can find them cruising the flats, making for an incredibly fun bite.

• Steelhead: These chrome rockets are also actively moving through the shallows, offering explosive fights.

• Pre-Spawn Smallmouth Bass: May and early June are prime time for monster smallmouths. They move shallow to prepare for the spawn, and Grand Traverse Bay is widely considered one of the best smallmouth fisheries in the country.

June: Working the Drop-Offs

As June rolls in, the action remains hot, but the fish begin to transition.

• The Strategy: Lake trout, cisco, and steelhead start moving off the shallow flats and begin hanging out right along the drop-offs.

• How to Fish It: This is the perfect time to position your boat and cast right to the edges of the drop-offs. It's an active, engaging way to fish before the summer heat pushes them into the deep blue.

Summer: July & August (The Salmon Showdown)

When mid-summer hits, it's time to gear up for the heavy hitters: Chinook (King) and Coho Salmon.

Late July: The Early Arrival

By July, the focus shifts to deeper water trolling. Toward the end of July, salmon start showing up in better numbers in the Grand Traverse Bays. These early arrivals are silver, hard-fighting, and ready to test your gear.

August & Early September: Prime Time

This is the main event. August through early September is peak salmon season in Traverse City.

• The Targets: Massive Chinook Salmon and aggressive Coho fill the bays as they stage for their fall river runs.
