The Best Way to See the Bays? From the Deck of a Boat.

Watching the shoreline from a winery deck or a dune overlook is incredible—but nothing beats actually being out on the water. Grand Traverse Bay is home to world-class sport fishing, boasting thriving populations of massive Lake Trout, King Salmon, Steelhead, and Cisco.

Whether you're a seasoned angler or a family looking to give the kids their first big-water adventure, breaking the sunrise on the bay is an unforgettable experience.

1. Sip and Sightsee on Old Mission Peninsula

Dividing East and West Grand Traverse Bay, Old Mission Peninsula offers some of the most breathtaking views in the Midwest. It’s the perfect place to spend a relaxed afternoon.

  • Brys Estate Vineyard & Winery: This 155-acre estate is an absolute must-visit. Grab a glass of wine or their famous Frosé and head up to their elevated outdoor deck for panoramic views of the rolling vineyards. If you're visiting in summer, don't miss their Secret Garden, a 12-acre oasis filled with thousands of stunning lavender plants.

  • Old Mission Lighthouse: Drive all the way to the northern tip of the peninsula to visit this historic 1870 lighthouse. Standing right on the 45th parallel (halfway between the equator and the North Pole), you can tour the museum, explore the surrounding beach trails, and look out over the deep blue waters of the bay.

2. Taste the Local Brews & Ciders in Suttons Bay

Heading over to the Leelanau Peninsula side, the charming village of Suttons Bay serves up an incredible craft beverage scene with a decidedly laid-back vibe.

  • Hop Lot Brewing Co.: Known for its iconic, family-friendly backyard, Hop Lot lets you enjoy great microbrews and classic campfire vibes. Sit at a picnic table tucked into the pine trees, gather around a fire pit, and sample their excellent food and beer menu.

  • Suttons Bay Ciders: Perched high on a hill, this spot offers a million-dollar view of West Grand Traverse Bay. Pair a flight of crisp, artisanal hard ciders with a stunning sunset—it’s one of the best vistas in the county.

3. Conquer the Trails of Sleeping Bear Dunes

You can’t visit the area without exploring the dramatic glacial landscapes of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

  • The Dune Climb: Test your legs on the famous, massive wall of sand. It’s a challenging hike, but reaching the top rewards you with views of Glen Lake (and Lake Michigan if you push all the way to the water).

  • Empire Bluffs Trail: For an easier hike with a massive payoff, this 1.5-mile round-trip trail winds through a coastal forest before opening up to a spectacular wooden boardwalk perched 400 feet above Lake Michigan.

  • Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive: If you prefer to take it easy, this 7.4-mile loop offers world-class drive-up overlooks, including the legendary Lake Michigan Overlook, where the bluff drops sharply into the turquoise water below.

4. Step Back in Time at Fishtown

Located in the historic village of Leland, Fishtown is a living remnant of a classic Great Lakes fishing village. Walk across the weathered docks and explore the historic shanties, which have been converted into unique local shops, galleries, and smokehouses. It’s the perfect spot to grab a smoked fish sandwich and watch the local boats come and go through the Leland river mouth.

Day 5: Explore Local Art and History

Take a break from outdoor activities to dive into Traverse City’s cultural scene.

  • Dennos Museum Center: Features contemporary art and Inuit sculptures.

  • Traverse City History Center: Learn about the city’s past and its role in the region.

  • Art galleries: Visit places like the Crooked Tree Arts Center to see local artists’ work.

This day offers a quieter pace and a chance to appreciate the creative spirit of the area.

Day 7: Relax and Savor Local Flavors

Wrap up your week with a day focused on relaxation and great food.

  • Spa day: Visit a local spa for a massage or wellness treatment.

  • Farm-to-table dining: Try restaurants like Trattoria Stella or The Cooks’ House for fresh, locally sourced meals.

  • Cherry picking: If visiting in summer, pick fresh cherries at nearby orchards, a signature experience in Traverse City.

End your trip with a sunset walk along the beach or a quiet moment at a local park.
